2022 NFL Mock Draft: Lions replace Jared Goff with Spencer Rattler
By Brad Weiss
Like the New York Jets, the Jacksonville Jaguars got their franchise quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick. With Lawrence there for hopefully the next 15 years, the goal is to now keep him on his feet, and they can do so by adding Zion Nelson here at pick No. 5 overall.
Nelson is considered a top-2 offensive tackle in this draft class and would fill an immediate need in Jacksonville. There are going to be growing pains in Year 1, but this is a long-term plan with Lawrence, and bolstering the offensive line has to be the priority.
The Philadelphia Eagles had a need at the cornerback position heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, and while they got some help in the fourth round with Zech McPherson from Texas Tech, more help is needed. One player they could have their eyes on is Kaiir Elam, a shutdown cornerback from the University of Florida.
Of course, if Jalen Hurts struggles next season as the full-time starter, the Eagles could very well be in the market for a signal-caller here at No. 6 overall. If he does well, they are in good shape, especially after adding the Heisman Trophy winner in DeVonta Smith on Thursday night.
The New York Giants had a terrific 2021 NFL Draft, getting a playmaker in the first round, trading with the Chicago Bears to net another 2022 first-round pick, and grabbing a steal with Azeez Ojulari. They accomplished a lot over the three-day event and could be the favorites in the NFC East heading into next season.
Of course, that will all hinge on Daniel Jones, and the hope is that he is the real deal. With this pick, the Giants turn their focus to the defensive line, getting the best defensive tackle right now in this draft class in DeMarvin Leal from Texas A&M.
The Carolina Panthers did more for Sam Darnold in one draft than the New York Jets did in his years with the team, getting him a wide receiver, tight end, and offensive tackle with three of their first four selections. Heading into 2021, they have already picked up his fifth-year option, so it is his time to prove he deserved to be a No. 3 overall pick a few years ago.
In 2022, the Panthers could go several different routes with this pick, but they do still need some help up front along the offensive line. With the No. 8 overall selection, they add Drake Jackson, a punishing edge rusher from USC, and one who could be a double-digit sack guy at the next level.
