3 mistakes Chiefs made in NFL Draft this year
1. Trading up to select TE Noah Gray
While there’s no denying Duke tight end Noah Gray has what it takes to be a difference-maker in the NFL, did the Chiefs really need to trade up to land him in the fifth round? That’s exactly what the team decided to do, which comes as a surprise considering there’s a guy by the name of Travis Kelce who is still playing like one of the best tight ends in the game.
Veach and the rest of the front office were clearly enamored with Gray and didn’t want to waste an opportunity to add him to the offense. Whether it be blocking or going out and making some timely catches for Mahomes as well, Veach is confident in what Gray will be able to bring to the table.
“Early on, we took a liking to Noah Gray and just saw him as a really unique inside slot receiver, H-Back, fullback,” Veach said via Chiefs Wire. “He’s a little undersized for being an in-line player, but it’s so hard to replace Travis (Kelce) when he’s not in the game because he has such a unique skill set. Noah has a similar— again you don’t want to compare anyone to Travis Kelce— but Noah has a unique skill set as a slot, bigger tight end, receiver.”
Only time will tell if Gray lives up to Veach’s expectations, but we think the team could have used that pick elsewhere.
