With their 2021 Kentucky Derby win under review, is Medina Spirit going to race the Preakness Stakes?

The 2021 Preakness Stakes will take place this Saturday, May 15. That is two weeks removed from what turned out to be a memorable Kentucky Derby, which was won by Medina Spirit. But after a failed post-race drug test, the victory is now in question.

Many have been wondering if the Bob Baffert-trained horse would be racing at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. this weekend. We have the answer for you right here.

Will Medina Spirit race in the 2021 Preakness Stakes?

Medina Spirit will take part in the 2021 Preakness Stakes after reaching an agreement with officials, that would have Baffert’s three horses be subject to additional testing and monitoring. This comes after Medina Spirit tested positive for betamethasone, a steroid used to treat inflammation in horses.

Baffert initially was combative about this news, but revealed earlier this week that Medina Spirit was treated with an ointment to treat dermatitis up to a day before the Kentucky Derby. Baffert later found out that betamethasone was included in the ointment.

Medina Spirit will start from the No. 3 starting gate, where it has 9-to-5 morning line odds. Baffert will not be in attendance for the race. The second round of testing is still pending for Medina Spirit, where another positive test will result in a disqualification.
