1. Failing to solidify the future at quarterback

The most important thing any NFL can do is to make sure they are armed with quality options at the quarterback position for both the present and future. The Steelers arguably come into the regular season without either of those two issues being addressed.

The organization hopes Roethlisberger can bounce back from an ugly 2020 campaign, but there’s a distinct possibility that his advanced age just means he’s cooked as a starter. That should have led Pittsburgh’s front office to work hard to find his successor in the offseason.

Instead, Colbert and his staff somehow elected to pass on acquiring a new backup. Mason Rudolph is the favorite to, once again, enter the regular season as the primary option behind Big Ben. He’s already proven that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a quality starter in this league. At the very least, the Steelers should have looked to acquire a quarterback lottery ticket in the draft.

Pittsburgh could have also been an interesting landing spot for someone like Jameis Winston who wants to find his way back into another starting job. Doing nothing at the quarterback position leaves the Steelers incredibly vulnerable heading into their 2021 campaign.
