Whatever happened to these 30 college basketball stars who flamed out in the NBA?
11. College basketball stars who flamed out in NBA: Corey Brewer
The Florida Gators remain college basketball’s last repeat national champion largely due to the fact that all five starters from the 2006 title winners opted to return to school to defend their crown. Four members of the starting lineup ended up getting drafted following the 2007 national championship, including forward Corey Brewer, who was one of the most intriguing pro prospects on the team.
Brewer was a dynamic defender due to his length and athleticism, making him an intriguing wing option in the NBA. The decision to return to school also paid significant dividends for Brewer, who dominated in the NCAA Tournament and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2007 Final Four.
That success helped Brewer be selected with the seventh overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves, a franchise that has helped stall the career of many prospects on this list. Brewer’s defense made him a valuable role player in the NBA but he was never able to take the leap to full-time starter status thanks to inconsistent offensive performance.
Eight different teams took a shot at Brewer during his career in hopes of harnessing all of the talent he displayed for the Gators. Brewer was definitely a solid contributor and helped the Dallas Mavericks win an NBA Championship in 2011 but he never reached the lofty heights some believed Brewer could attain after that 2007 Final Four.
