Texas A&M hit a rough stretch in the SEC, but still has the talent on its roster to make things interesting
The 2021 NCAA Softball season got started well for Texas A&M as the Aggies jumped out to a 19-3 start. But down the stretch of the season, things didn’t go so well for Texas A&M. Against SEC foes, A&M managed to win just eight of their 24 conference games.
Season overview
With a 31-21 overall record, the Texas A&M Aggies could certainly have had a better year. The Aggies failed to consistently contend against SEC foes and were eliminated quickly out of the SEC Tournament. The Aggies, currently on a seven-game losing streak, need to find a way to bounce back fast if they want to compete in Norman.
Best wins
While the Aggies haven’t done well against SEC teams, two of their best wins come over SEC foes. Texas A&M got its conference slate started with a win over a ranked LSU team and then later thrashed Mississippi State before the Bulldogs hit their streak.
- March 20 at LSU – 2-1
- April 25 at Mississippi State – 8-1
Worst losses
The Aggies suffered several difficult losses throughout their SEC schedule, losing to Mississippi State and Alabama in deflating fashion.
- April 1 at Alabama – 3-11 in five innings
- April 24 at Mississippi State – 1-8
Players to watch
Makinzy Herzog – Herzog has the ability to do just about anything her team needs her to do. She’s pitched 120.1 innings and has 118 strikeouts to go with a 2.56 ERA. Along with that, Herzog has a .370 batting average and has hit 13 home runs.
Haley Lee – Lee is one of the best hitters on her team. With a .413 batting average and 22 home runs this season, she’s proven to be a threat at the plate.
Kayla Poynter – Poynter boasts a team-best 2.39 ERA and has struck out 63 batters in 93.2 innings pitched.
Final thoughts
The Aggies will need to find a way to regain the momentum that they had early on in the season. After having trouble overcoming teams in the SEC, Texas A&M looks very vulnerable at the moment. The Aggies have a lot to prove and this is a great opportunity to do just that.
