Dave Martinez steals first base and chucks it in all-time manager blowup (Video)

Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez made the most of his ejection against the Cubs by pulling up first base and throwing it in protest.

It’s time to update those compilations of all-time great baseball manager outbursts.

Dave Martinez submitted a new one on Wednesday evening as his Nationals took on the Chicago Cubs.

When Trea Turner was called out for defensive interference on a dropped third strike, Martinez absolutely lost it and took it upon himself to show umpire Pat Hoberg how he got it wrong.

That involved scooping up first base, throwing it away and then giving it a kick for good measure.

Apparently, the groundskeeper who put the base back in place got a standing ovation from the crowd at Wrigley Field, according to Chris Emma of 670 The Score.

This all happened in the top of the seventh inning, with the Nationals leading 4-2. Since it denied Washington a runner on first, it makes sense for Martinez to be miffed. Then again, it was the first out with the inning still very much alive and the game still controlled by the Nats.

Martinez may have overreacted just a little bit.

Wins against the Cubs haven’t been easy to get. Washington lost the first two games in the series. In addition to Wednesday’s game, the two clubs will meet again on Thursday afternoon.

The Nationals are trying to climb their way out of last place in the NL East. They trail the Marlins by a game with a 16-22 record. Things won’t get easier as they deal with a string of positive COVID-19 tests.

The Cubs enjoyed their 7-3 and 6-3 victories over Washington to begin the series, rising to second in the NL Central.
