The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo to serve as a consultant.

Last year, the New York Giants hired former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett to be their offensive coordinator under new sideline boss Joe Judge. Over a year later, the Cowboys decided to hire someone from the Giants’ past.

According to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, the Cowboys are hiring former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo as a consultant.

As Garafolo notes, McAdoo is familiar with McCarthy during their time together with the Green Bay Packers. Once McCarthy was hired as head coach, McAdoo joined his staff as a tight ends coach until 2011 before being promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2012, a position he held until joining the Giants to be their offensive coordinator in 2014.

After two seasons as New York’s coordinator, McAdoo was hired to replace then-head coach Tom Coughlin. McAdoo’s first season with the Giants was very successful, as the team held a 11-5 record and clinched a Wild Card berth before losing  38-13 to, ironically, the Packers in the first-round of the playoffs.

2017 was a disastrous season for McAdoo, headlined by his decision to end starting quarterback Eli Manning’s consecutive starts streak by benching him for Geno Smith. Following a loss to the now-Las Vegas Raiders that brought New York’s record to 2-10 that year, McAdoo was fired alongside then-general manager Jerry Reese.

After over two years out of the league, McAdoo was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars to be their quarterbacks coach. The stint lasted one season after head coach Doug Marrone was fired.

The Cowboys are looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2018, and McCarthy feels that McAdoo can help out in his consulting role.
