They say you can’t have too many goaltenders. The Florida Panthers would say otherwise. Currently, they have three NHL caliber goalies – Sergei Bobrovsky, Spencer Knight, and Chris Driedger and they have room for two of them at most.

While the Panthers would love to get rid of Bobrovsky and his massive contract, who the heck would want him at this point? Knight’s not going anywhere because he’s clearly the future (maybe even present) franchise goalie for the Panthers. This leaves Driedger, an unrestricted free agent, as an odd man out.

True, Driedger didn’t have a good postseason. But he’s been objectively better than Jarry over the past two seasons, albeit in a limited sample size. Over the past two regular seasons, in 35 games (34 starts), Driedger has a .931% save percentage. That’s the best save percentage among all goalies with at least 30 games played.

Driedger has proven he’s at worst a pretty good goalie in a tandem. At 27 years old, he’s one of the youngest available options. Driedger’s price could get a bit high because there aren’t many quality goalies available in this offseason. But he won’t be as expensive as someone like Philipp Grubauer (who will probably re-sign with the Colorado Avalanche anyway) or even Petr Mrazek.
