3 goalies the Pittsburgh Penguins can add this offseason
1. Darcy Kuemper
As I said earlier, this offseason doesn’t present a ton of options as far as goaltenders are concerned. So maybe the Penguins should avoid free agency and look at the trade market. The trade market will be hard to predict due to the flat salary cap, but I’d be surprised if the Arizona Coyotes don’t listen if teams come calling about Darcy Kuemper.
Some might be wondering why I didn’t choose John Gibson. Well, he’s been awful the past two seasons. Sure, the Anaheim Ducks have to, but let’s compare Gibson and Kuemper over the past two seasons.
2019-20 GSAA
Kuemper: 7.7
Gibson: -18.0
2020-21 GSAA
Kuemper: -0.2
Gibson: -7.4
Give me Kuemper. He’s been objectively better, even though he’s been on a mediocre Arizona Coyotes team. Kuemper also has the more reasonable contract. He has one year left at $4.5 million. Gibson, on the other hand, has seven years left at $6.4 million per year.
The Penguins need to go all in as long as Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, and Evgeni Malkin remain high-level players. This season, they proved they’re still among the league’s best players.
Crosby would be right around fifth on my Hart Trophy ballot after yet another season averaging at least a point per game. Letang deserves Norris Trophy votes. Malkin overcame a slow start to finish with 28 points in 33 games. The Penguins owe it to them to go for it next season. This makes Kuemper their best viable option.
