2. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have been easy to tie to trade rumors around Ertz, and they were one of the teams reported to be interested earlier in the offseason. Indianapolis of course acquired quarterback Carson Wentz from the Eagles, creating the tie to Ertz. Ertz topped 100 targets in four straight seasons (2016-2019) with Wentz (mostly) as his quarterback.

With Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox as the top two on the depth chart, the Colts may not fit the bill as a particularly “tight-end needy” team. But Doyle is merely an average player, and Alie-Cox is more raw potential than production right now. Without a proven No. 1 wide receiver in his prime, the idea of adding another target for Wentz shouldn’t be dismissed.

As is perpetually the case, cap space is not a big issue for the Colts ($14.75 million, according to Over The Cap). Reuniting Ertz with Wentz (and head coach Frank Reich) will help them get the best out of their new quarterback, with automatic rapport right away.

From Philadelphia’s end, it might be odd for them to send Ertz to the place they sent Wentz. But if the Colts make the playoffs in 2021 (with a healthy Wentz), the Eagles would get a third 2022 first-round pick.

The prospect of sending Ertz to the AFC, as they did Wentz by the way, might be enough for the Eagles. But also having some level of interest in how well the Colts do this year might tip the scales, along with adding another asset in an Ertz deal.
