Boston Bruins winger Brad Marchand got the win for his team with an overtime goal against the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

The Boston Bruins carried a 1-0 lead throughout Game 3 before New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal tied things up with over five minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime. Unfortunately for Islanders fans inside Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Bruins winger Brad Marchand got the last laugh.

Over three minutes into overtime, Marchand took a pass from defenseman Charlie McAvoy, skated alongside the left boards and unleashed a shot past Semyon Varlamov to get the 2-1 win and the 2-1 series lead.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Brad Marchand gives Bruins a 2-1 lead over Islanders

This is not Marchand’s first overtime winner in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In Game 2 of Boston’s first-round series against the Washington Capitals, Marchand scored the overtime winner to tie the series up at one game apiece. Boston went on to win the following three games to advance into the second-round.

Varlamov stood on his head for the Islanders throughout the contest, but just could not stop Marchand’s game-winner. In over 63 minutes of playing time, Varlamov stopped 39-of-41 shots on goal, including all eight Boston shots on the power play.

Bruins forward Craig Smith scored the team’s first goal, with assists coming from winger Taylor Hall and defenseman Matt Grzelcyk. Goaltender Tuukka Rask stopped 28-of-29 shots from the Islanders.

The Bruins will look to extend their series lead to 3-1 with a win in Game 4 this Saturday night.
