Robin Lopez

Robin Lopez proved he still has a mean hook shot, but given the Wizards tight cap situation, re-signing him doesn’t make very much sense this year.

At this stage in his career, the seven-footer doesn’t rebound particularly well for his size, averaging 3.8 per game. His defense definitely didn’t benefit Washington this season as he posted a career-worst -1.4 defensive box plus/minus this season.

To be sure, Lopez can still help a team, but not for the $7 million the Wizards paid him this last season.

With Thomas Bryant returning from injury, Lopez would drop down to third or fourth in Washington’s center rotation. That kind of money for that role isn’t reasonable.

The 33-year-old signed a one-year deal, so he’s on his way to free agency. There will be other teams out there willing to offer him a new contract with a larger role to compel him as well.

When it comes to Lopez running it back with Washington, there’s not enough good reason from either the team or the player to make it happen.
