3 Golden State Warriors players who won’t be back next season
1. Kelly Oubre
Oubre’s up-and-down first season with the Warriors ended early due to a left wrist injury. But he was on an upswing before being injured, averaging 17.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game over his last 38 games. He shot 47.1 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc over that span as well.
There’s already buzz pointing to Oubre’s departure from Golden State as he gets set to hit free agency. Klay Thompson’s return next season is lined up to push him into a reserve role, which he may not love. If he’s indeed looking for a deal that’ll pay him $20 million a year, that will surely be too rich for the Warriors. Tim Kawakami of The Athletic has added it’s “wholly unlikely” Oubre re-signs.
Marc Berman of the New York Post has pointed to Oubre as a target for the New York Knicks while adding there’s some mutual interest. The Knicks have a clear need for some athleticism on the wings, which Oubre can provide. Other teams may line up ready to buy into the 25-year old Oubre’s ceiling.
The Warriors need scoring punch around Curry, so keeping Oubre would be a nice idea. But with him seeking more than they can probably afford and other suitors in play to offer a bigger role, Oubre is surely headed for his fourth team in as many seasons next year.
