2 reasons Alabama football will repeat as national champions
By John Buhler
1. Alabama can take advantage of quarterback uncertainty among contenders
This is something other Power Five contenders could take advantage of as well. Of the handful of teams with a realistic shot of winning the College Football Playoff, only Georgia and Oklahoma return their starting quarterbacks from a season ago. Alabama is in the same boat with Clemson, Ohio State and Texas A&M among the contending teams who will be starting a new quarterback.
The great news for Alabama is Bryce Young was a five-star coming out of high school. He backed up Davey O’Brien winner Mac Jones last season. Frankly, Young would have started at most other Power Five schools as a true freshman, as he was that talented coming out. Simply, Alabama will not have to beat elite quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields in back-to-back games.
While guys like JT Daniels and Spencer Rattler could be among the best quarterbacks in college, other proven starters like Sam Howell, Brock Purdy and Kedon Slovis are on teams that are good enough to make the playoff, but probably not win the whole thing. If Young proves to be better than Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei and Ohio State’s CJ Stroud, that gives Alabama a big edge in 2021.
Overall, we know that Alabama will reload because that is the type of program Saban has built. Losing first-rounders to the NFL or top coordinators to other Power Five jobs, that does not matter.
As long as Young is close to what Jones was last year and Saban can out-scheme Fisher, Kiffin and Smart like he usually does, Alabama is in a great spot to repeat as national champions.
