New York Jets . 4. Scouting Report. AFC East . . player. 30. Pick Analysis

The Jets might be the laughing stock of the NFL, but they’re closer to contention than one can imagine. If Robert Saleh is the right coach, they have two of the three pieces in place to be a successful organization.

If Zach Wilson is the right quarterback, consider it the holy trinity.

Joe Douglas wasted little time this offseason improving both sides of the ball. Adding Corey Davis and Elijah Moore to the passing game already gives the No. 2 pick better options than Sam Darnold had in his three seasons with gang green. Defensively, Carl Lawson remains one of the more underrated pass-rushers and run stuffers in the game.

The offensive line will be a rock on the left side with Mekhi Becton at left tackle and rookie Alijah Vera-Tucker as his running mate. Speaking of running, the combination of Tevin Coleman and Michael Carter could be trouble in the passing game and short-yardage situations.

If New York can come to terms on a long-term deal with Marcus Maye, the building blocks are in place. The only problem is the AFC East seems ready to contend with Miami, Buffalo and New England already.

Next year’s draft is a good thing for New York since they still will have four early selections from the Darnold and Jamal Adams trades. With just several needs away from actually contending, a down year in the Big Apple is not so much of a bad thing if Saleh and Wilson show promise together.
