4. Geno Smith is taking a roster spot from someone with upside

Much more was expected when the New York Jets made West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith a second-round pick in 2013. He was the club’s primary starter behind center for two seasons and the struggles were evident. In each of those campaigns, he failed to complete at least 60 percent of his throws.

There were a combined 25 touchdown passes to go along with 34 interceptions. In those 30 contests, he fumbled 16 times and gave up the ball seven more times. He would wind up with the Giants (2017) and Chargers (2018) and eventually the Seahawks in ’19 and was re-signed this year. But could he face a challenge for the backup job this summer?

3. Damarious Randall may be expendable

It has been an interesting six-year stay in the NFL for a defensive back that was the 30th overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. That year, the Green Bay Packers opted for Arizona State cornerback Damarious Randall. He spent three years with them but was eventually dealt to the Cleveland Browns.

There he made the conversion to safety and he played and started in a combined 26 times for the club over two seasons. In 2020, he inked a one-year deal with the Raiders but never played for the team. He wound up on Pete Carroll’s club a year ago and was re-signed this offseason and is expected to return to the cornerback spot.
