2021 NBA Draft Lottery: Who should each team take with the No. 1 pick?
By Ian Levy
Rumors are that Zion’s camp is unhappy with the core the Pelicans have assembled around him. The idea is fairly absurd considering they’ve essentially only had two offseasons to work with, but landing the No. 1 pick (a 4.5 percent chance) would certainly smooth any ruffled feathers. The Pelicans’ roster is still taking shape and issues like the re-signing (or not) of Lonzo Ball are big pieces that could push them in different directions. But regardless, Cunningham seems like the right pick here.
Williamson blossomed as a ball-handler this year but Cunningham is a next-level creator and he could help take some of the halfcourt creation load of Ball will getting even more out of Williamson when the ball isn’t in his hands. He’d also be a huge defensive upgrade on the wing over anyone currently on the roster and could potentially even give them the flexibility to explore trading Brandin Ingram down the line of other more pressing needs emerge over the next few seasons.
