2021 NBA Draft Lottery: Who should each team take with the No. 1 pick?
By Ian Levy
The Kings have gotten themselves in trouble in the past by focusing on fit over a best-player-available approach. They liked the idea of a big man like Marvin Bagley over adding another creator like Luka freaking Doncic or Trae damn Young in the 2018 NBA Draft. If the Kings get lucky with their 4.5 percent odds and land the top pick they could find themselves facing a similar choice. Trust me, I recognize the worrying symmetry here of taking Mobley over Cunningham because he’s a better fit with De’Aaron Fox.
The difference is that it’s not just about what’s best for Fox, it’s also about continuing to get the most out of Buddy Hield and leaving space for Tyrese Haliburton to continue to blossom. And while there are some offensive similarities between Mobley and Bagley, Mobley is a much better passer and a potentially game-changing defensive big man which adds a completely new wrinkle to the comparison. The Kings would not be wrong for taking Cunningham, but I think Mobley could do more for their ceiling and speeding up their timeline towards competitiveness.
