Tottenham could use Oliver Skipp to land Max Aarons
Tottenham see Max Aarons as an ideal replacement for Serge Aurier. Spurs may need to get creative to land the Norwich right back.
Fabio Paratici hasn’t found the right manager to lead Tottenham, but that isn’t stopping him from making moves in the transfer market. Spurs’ new Director of Football has already identified Max Aarons as a suitable replacement for Serge Aurier at right-back. To land him, the North London Club might need to get a little creative.
Norwich are keen to keep hold of Aarons next season as they rejoin the Premier League. However, according to The Express, officials at Carrow Road are willing to listen to offers in the neighborhood of £30 million for the speedy fullback. Tottenham see that as a terrific bargain compared to the £50 million Brighton want for Tariq Lamptey this summer.
Paratici has a clear remit to overhaul Tottenham’s squad as soon as possible. That’s a tricky proposition given the lack of transfer cash available to Spurs as a result of last year’s global pandemic. Fortunately for Paratici, he has a potential ace in the hole when it comes to prying Aarons away from Norwich.
Oliver Skipp could be the key for Tottenham
Tottenham should offer Norwich the chance to take Skipp on loan for a second consecutive season as a potential makeweight for an Aarons deal. The young midfielder was a cog in the Canaries’ midfield last season when he made 44 starts for Daniel Farke’s squad.
Norwich have made no secret of their desire to bring Skipp back for another year, but Tottenham haven’t committed to another loan because of their own midfield issues. It’s entirely possible that Skipp could carve out a starting spot in Tottenham’s starting XI next season depending on who they hire as their manager.
Tottenham should forego the idea of Skipp competing for big minutes at Spurs if he can save them significant funds on an Aarons transfer. It’s easy to envision a scenario where Norwich cut as much as £10 million off their asking price if they can be guaranteed Skipp’s services for the 2021/22 season.
That sort of deal would represent a strong win for both parties. Tottenham would get the right-back they need to groom as their starter for the present and future. Norwich would keep a valuable midfielder for another season as they fight to stay in England’s top flight. It’s just the sort of creative transfer that clubs need to utilize in this summer of fiscal uncertainty.
