Danny Ainge so would have almost won this trade for the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics have already undergone major changes this offseason, and it appears they are not done. Former general manager Danny Ainge stepped down after so many years of almost winning the big trade. Brad Stevens leaves the bench to go upstairs with former Brooklyn Nets assistant Ime Udoka taking over for him as the Celtics head coach. Oh yeah, they also traded Kemba Walker.

That leaves the door wide-open for the Celtics to acquire the Cavaliers guard. Then again, the last time the Celtics traded for a Cavaliers point guard, that totally blew up in their face two years after the fact, and that guy was a freaking NBA champion! Regardless, Sexton would slot in nicely as the Celtics’ third-best player behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in 2022.

The hold-up here is this is a new era of Celtics basketball, so we do not know how Stevens wants to build this team or how Udoka is going to coach it. Clearly, Boston will want to be better than the seventh-best team in the Eastern Conference next year. Trading for Sexton could have them push towards the top five, but when does Boston ever want to give up its precious assets?

It may serve the Cavaliers to strike a deal with a team in desperate need of a primary ball-handler.
