2 reasons Texas can win the Big 12 this year
By John Buhler
1. Texas football can win the Big 12 behind Steve Sarkisian’s innovative offense
This is what it is all about. Texas has hired a head coach in Sarkisian to finally bring them back. He brings an SEC ethos and NFL experience to a Big 12 program in dire need of being coached up. Texas has the talent on the roster and in-state for his staff to develop. We should see midway through the 2022 campaign if Texas “pops” or not under Sarkisian. It might even happen this year.
Admittedly, Texas should have the third-best odds of making the College Football Playoff out of the Big 12 firmly behind Oklahoma and Iowa State in that order. This is because Oklahoma is the traditional power in the conference and has the right head coach in Lincoln Riley. Despite little success historically as a program, Matt Campbell is on his way towards coaching superstardom.
So factor in improved coaching acumen in Sarkisian, as well as elite talent on the roster with players such as defensive lineman Alfred Collins and running back Bijan Robinson, Texas has a chance to do something special. We have to believe Sarkisian will win that game or two this year that Herman never could. This could be the difference in getting to Arlington and winning there.
Overall, Texas plays in the right conference to get to the title bout in year one under a new head coach. The Longhorns don’t have to win a division or something, just be a top-two team in their league. By hiring Sarkisian away from Alabama, it signifies that Texas is done messing around as a program. They want to beat Oklahoma regularly and now have the head coach who can do that.
Don’t be shocked if an 11-1 Texas team wins the Big 12 championship and makes the playoff.
