3 most insane stats from Shohei Ohtani’s MVP campaign
Shohei Ohtani pitching stats are off the charts
Once you begin to appreciate the magnificence of his hitting, Ohtani pitching stats are off the charts as well. His latest outing against the Yankees was by far his worst of the season, maybe the worst of his career. He allowed seven earned runs, walked four batters, and recorded just two outs before getting pulled. Up to that point, he’s been dealing this season and the numbers show.
Entering Wednesday, Ohtani owned a 2.58 ERA in his 11 starts this season. Considering the injuries, one of which resulted in Tommy John surgery, has limited Ohtani to just 12 starts on the mound from 2018-2020, it’s been an excellent season for his return as a pitcher. It’s unfair to expect Ohtani to single-handedly carry a poor Angels rotation, but that’s exactly what he’s done up to this point.
He currently owns a 3.60 ERA, 1.267 WHIP, 3.74 FIP across 60 innings in 12 starts. The most impressive stat for Ohtani as a pitcher is his 12.5 strikeouts per-nine innings rate. He’s among the league’s best when it comes to generating swings and misses.
This can be attributed to his abilities of deceptively keeping hitters off balance with his high-90s four-seam fastball and high-80s splitter.
The numbers might not be the same as Jacob deGrom, but it’s still impressive nonetheless. To witness the high-levels of performance of Ohtani on the mound and in the batter’s box this season is truly history before our very eyes.
