The Chicago White Sox are already dealing with a wave of injuries. Now add catcher Yasmani Grandal to the list of concerns.

In Chicago, when it rains, it pours.

The White Sox are now dealing with another injury in the lineup after catcher Yasmani Grandal left Friday’s game against the Tigers with calf tightness.

The team tweeted he would be further evaluated for the issue in his left calf.

Zack Collins came in to replace Grandal in the fifth inning.

The White Sox were already playing without third baseman Yoan Moncada, who suffered a bruised hand against the Twins on Thursday. He won’t play for the rest of the weekend.

That’s on top of a slew of other injuries Chicago players have suffered. Second baseman Nick Madrigal is out for the season with a torn hamstring. They’ve played most of the campaign without outfielders Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert.

Other players on the injured list include right fielder Adam Eaton, utility man Jake Lamb and center fielder Adam Engel, plus relief pitchers Aaron Bummer and Evan Marshall.

By coincidence, the White Sox just sent catcher Yermin Mercedes down to Triple-A. The designated hitter was on an absolute tear to start the season. However, he batted .159/.221/.190 in June without hitting a home run.

If Grandal has to miss time, Chicago could bring Mercedes back up and put him behind the plate. However, there are concerns about his defensive capabilities there. The team could also bring catcher prospect Seby Zavala along. Chicago Sun-Times beat writer Daryl Van Schouwen reported Zavala was removed from Triple-A Charlotte’s game on Friday night.

Even without Grandal, the White Sox were able to beat the Tigers, 8-2. Grandal went 1-of-2 with an RBI before his exit. Gavin Sheets and Andrew Vaughn hit home runs.

Next. White Sox could trade for top prospect Adam Frazier. dark
