3 Chiefs fighting for their job in training camp
Armani Watts
The Chiefs’ 2018 draft class has largely been one to forget. Though third-round picks Derrick Nnadi and Dorian O’Daniel have stuck as a starter on the defensive line and a core special teams player respectively, defensive end Breeland Speaks, their top pick in that class, is no longer with the team and there is a decent chance fourth-round safety Watts will see his tenure in Kansas City come to an end in 2021.
Watts has made one start in his three years with the Chiefs, registering two pass breakups and a pair of sacks, and is buried on the depth chart behind Kansas City’s established top three at that position — Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill and Daniel Sorensen.
And his position as the fourth safety appears to be very much under threat from an unlikely source. Indeed, per Charles Goldman of The Chiefs Wire, undrafted rookie Devon Key stood out during the Chiefs’ offseason programs. Goldman wrote that he sees Key as being in the lead for that fourth spot going into training camp.
Having had limited opportunities to make an impact in three seasons with the Chiefs, Watts must grasp the chance to show he can be an influential player on defense during training camp and preseason.
