2. Cardinals trade rumors: Kris Bryant could become a full-time outfielder

Of all the places Kris Bryant could end up in the upcoming weeks, St. Louis would be the last most people would think. Regardless, his value will remain high given his 2021 statistics and ability to play multiple positions in the infield and outfield.

Despite a poor June showing where he posted a .114 batting average, Bryant has still managed a slash line of .268/.349/.498 with 16 home runs and 43 RBIs in 324 plate appearances this season and was just named an NL All-Star reserve.

He’s also played in 27 games at third base, 12 games at first, and 51 games combined between all three outfield spots. Bryant has shown an above-average ability to play the outfield well, committing just one error during his time spent there this season.

Acquiring Bryant surely wouldn’t move Nolan Arenado or Paul Goldschmidt out of their corner infield spots, but he would give the Cardinals consistent offensive production in their outfield.

The team has frequently used Edman in right field, pushing Matt Carpenter to second base. Edman has performed well, but the same can’t be said about Carpenter and his .194 batting average this season.

Bryant is in the final year of arbitration and is set to earn $19.5 million this season before becoming a free agent. It’s the type of move the Cardinals would have to take a significant risk, but right now they’re in no position to do so.
