4 massive trade chips Yankees need to sell in a fire sale
By John Buhler
Trading Aaron Judge would send shockwaves all over Major League Baseball
I’m not saying they should do it, but man, the Yankees would get so much in return if they were to part ways with perennial All-Star right fielder Aaron Judge. He is the face of the franchise and is one of the most marketable players in all of baseball. Not only is he a bona-fide superstar, but he has not been paid an inordinate amount of money just yet. He is not a free agent until 2023.
Judge would provide raw power from the right side of the plate from a key position in the outfield. Since the Yankees are tied to Giancarlo Stanton financially, they unfortunately may have to keep the right-handed power bat redundancy in pinstripes, while parting ways with their best pure talent. Then again, the Yankees could reload its farm system if they did put Judge on the block.
Judge offers the best combination of power, productivity, star power and a favorable contract of any player the Yankees could theoretically consider trading. Should they do it? Only if they get a Godfather offer for him, or have fully gotten behind the idea of a complete teardown. Should they keep him through the trade deadline, he could be moved ahead of next year’s deadline instead.
Overall, the Yankees are probably too proud to start selling off their marquee assets. The front office will surely find a way to convince itself that New York is still in this thing, though the current AL East standings beg to differ. While it may not happen this July, if the Yankees fail to reach the postseason, expect the roster and coaching staff to look totally different than this one in 2022.
What other players could the Yankees put on the trading block if they go into fire sale mode?
