8. Carl Osburn

Medal count: 11 (5 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze)

Sport: Shooting

Games attended: 1912, 1916, 1920, 1924

For nearly 50 years, Carl Osburn was the most decorated American Olympian of all time. The rifleman still has the distinction of winning more medals than any other non-swimming American athlete. A member of the US Navy, Osburn won eleven Olympic medals in sports shooting events from Stokholm 1912 to Paris 1924.

One of America’s greatest marksmen, Osburn retired from the navy in 1939 with the rank of captain. The Jacksontown, Ohio native was inducted into the American Shooting Hall of Fame in 1994 and remains the most successful shooter in Olympic history.

Osburn’s widow, Mary, donated a collection of his medals, trophies and other memorabilia to the Naval Historical Foundation shortly after his death in December 1966. They are now in the possession of the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Curatorial Management Branch.
