Watch: ESPN insider predicts Oklahoma has potential to win national championship
By John Buhler
One ESPN insider believes the Oklahoma football team has what it takes to win it all in 2021.
While the Oklahoma football program has been a regular in the College Football Playoff field, the Sooners have yet to win a single national semifinal game to date.
ESPN’s Heather Dinich knows Oklahoma has been one of the better programs of the playoff era, but believes this could be the year the Sooners win their first national title since 2000. She credits the defense of Alex Grinch providing the necessary balance Oklahoma will need to win multiple playoff games. It also helps to have the Heisman Trophy front-runner Spencer Rattler at quarterback.
Here is the clip of what Dinich said about Oklahoma’s title chances on ESPN’s Get Up! Wednesday.
Oklahoma football: ESPN insider predicts Sooners can win the national title
Oklahoma has won the Big 12 each of the last six years. On four of those occasions, the Sooners have made it to the College Football Playoff. Outside of Chris Klieman’s Kansas State Wildcats and Matt Campbell’s Iowa State Cyclones, Lincoln Riley’s Sooners do not have many issues putting away inferior Big 12 competition. Their issue is matching other Power Five contenders’ intensity.
Again, having arguably the best quarterback in the Power Five in Rattler is a huge boost to Oklahoma’s title aspirations. As long as Grinch’s defense can translate beyond containing Air Raid offenses commonplace in the Big 12, Oklahoma might have its best shot to date on a national stage. Of course, Clemson, Ohio State and the SEC powerhouses loom large ahead of this season.
Oklahoma can make the playoff, but it remains to be seen if the Sooners win a postseason game.
