Medal Count: Which summer Olympians have the most medals of all time?
7. Takashi Ono – Japan
Medal count: 13 medals (5 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze)
Sport: Gymnastics
Games attended: 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964,
Ono, hailing from Akita Prefecture, is a name that you may not be familiar with, but he’s one of the most decorated gymnasts to ever do it. His first time in the Olympics came in the 1952 cycle in Helsinki.
Ono, who was in competition with a gymnast from the Soviet Union who comes in later on this list, came out with his first Bronze. This is a feat when you’re taking on an athletic superpower, but he wasn’t satisfied. He returned to the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, where he was once again competing with the USSR.
But this time he was able to take what he believed was rightfully his: his first gold. Ono and his team would keep at it to stay in top condition and repeat the results they had in 1956.
By the 1964 games, Ono was the oldest member on the team but not out of the game yet. He tallied up more gold medals for the Japanese National Team, but this was his last ride.
