6. Edoardo Mangiarotti – Italy

Medal Count: 13 (6 gold, 5 silver, 2 bronze)

Sport: Fencing

Games attended: 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956

The only Italian in the top 10 most decorated summer Olympians, Edoardo Mangiarotti is also the only fencer on this list as well.

Mangiarotti began his Olympic fencing career in 1936, where he received his first medal in Berlin. But this wasn’t just his first medal, it was his first Gold. He went on to rack up more medals in Helsinki and Melbourne, all gold and silver.

His career spanned two decades, putting him in the game for a while, but his track record was extensive. He would only rack up two bronze medals in his entire Olympic fencing career.

He went on to break Paavo Nurmi’s record in 1960 as the most decorated Summer Olympian with 13 medals, and this would stand unbroken until Larisa Latynina came onto the scene.
