5. Boris Shakhlin – Soviet Union

Medal Count: 13 ( 7 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze)

Sport: Gymnastics

Games attended: 1956, 1960, 1964

Remember the Japan vs. Russia competition arc in the story of Takashi Ono? Well, here was his arch-rival on the other side of the mat: Boris Shakhlin.

The Russians were always the athletic superpower, but Boris was a whole other beast. In the 1960 Olympics, he was the all-around champion.

His talent was enough to land him 13 medals throughout his Olympic career, the same number as Ono, of course, but with more gold. Unfortunately, he had to cut his career short after a heart attack at just 35 years old, but he was considered the best gymnasts of his time.

His record was pretty solid until one of his fellow comrades on the gym mat challenged that feat, and he just so happens to be the next person on this list.
