The Saints and Vikings have had many intense playoff battles in recent years, and Marcus Williams was directly involved in one of those iconic moments. He was the fallen defender on the “Minneapolis Miracle,” but he could end up with the team in 2022. The Vikings have a huge hole at safety, the entire secondary, in fact. They were exposed during most of the 2020 season, whether in the passing game or the running game. They performed like that with Harrison Smith on the field.

Although Smith is still with the team, he isn’t getting any older. Anthony Harris left the team for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Minnesota replaced him with Xavier Woods. However, Woods is on a one-year deal and could find another home in 2022. Williams could be a valuable replacement when free agency approaches the next offseason.

Mike Zimmer is a defensive-minded coach, so his attention is always on improving his defensive unit. He’s seen Williams’ talent first hand in recent years and knows that Minnesota could use a hybrid safety like him. If the Saints fail to reach an agreement with Williams, he could join the other side of the intense NFL rivalry.
