The Vikings’ defensive backfield was an area of weakness throughout the 2020 regular season. Minnesota allowed an average of 258.8 passing yards per game (eighth-most in NFL) and 30 passing touchdowns (ninth-most), per ESPN. So, the front office addressed those needs in the offseason.

This offseason, the Vikings pulled off the biggest stunner by signing former Arizona Cardinals mainstay Patrick Peterson to a one-year contract to be their top cornerback on the depth chart. The Vikings further added to the depth chart by signing Bashaud Breeland, who spent the past two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. With that, there are only so many spots available on the roster.

If there is one player in danger of getting cut, it’s Kris Boyd.

The Vikings used a seventh-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft on Boyd. Through his first two seasons in the NFL, Boyd tallied 56 combined tackles (three for loss), three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In coverage last season (10 games, five starts), Boyd allowed 28 receptions for 379 yards and two touchdowns on 39 targets, per Pro Football Reference.

With the veterans they added in free agency and the likes of Cameron Danztler and Jeff Gladney on the depth chart, Boyd could be on the outside looking in.
