Is Jordan Spieth in the 2021 Olympics?
Jordan Spieth is one of the most popular golfers in the world but will he be representing the United States at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo?
Bursting onto the PGA Tour scene in his early 20s, Jordan Spieth emerged as an immediately popular figure in the golfing world in the early 2010s and his popularity has only grown since then. Of course, he’s backed that up with 12 career PGA Tour wins and three major championship victories as well. He also most recently finished runner-up at The Open Championship this year.
Given his popularity and status as arguably the most recognizable American golfer who you could still consider in his prime, many fans would love to see him represent the United States at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. His previous performances representing the USA in the Ryder Cup only add to that.
So will fans get their wish of seeing Spieth tee it up at the Olympics this year?
After failing to qualify, Jordan Spieth will not be playing golf at the 2021 Olympics
Anyone hoping to see Jordan Spieth represent the United States won’t have that opportunity in the 2021 Olympics.
Qualifying for golf at the 2021 Olympics is based on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) with the 15 highest-ranked players in the world as of June 21 making the field and then the highest-ranked players from countries with fewer than two golfers having already qualified. More importantly for Spieth, each country is only allowed four participants.
Even with Dustin Johnson, the No. 2-ranked player in the world, withdrawing his name from consideration, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau were all ranked higher than Spieth, thus forming the American team for the Olympics.
Having said that, fans should hold out hope that Jordan Spieth will be eligible for the 2024 Olympics. He has shown resurgent play this year and has shot up to No. 14 in the OWGR. On his current trajectory, he should be able to qualify for the next round of games.
