According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Indianapolis Colts are close to signing Darius Leonard to a contract extension.

After the San Francisco 49ers broke the bank to make linebacker Fred Warner happy, the attention has now turned to the Indianapolis Colts and superstar Darius Leonard. Leonard is also in line for a big pay day, which could be coming soon.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts and Leonard are closing in on a big-time extension, which would pay Leonard around $19 million per season over the next four years. Could that deal be announced by the end of the week?

With Warner, his deal paid him $95 million in his five-year extension. Now looking at Leonard, there’s no question he’s worthy of a new contract as well. Similar to Warner, Leonard has been a tackle machine since entering the league in 2018.

His rookie season, Leonard was a beast on the gridiron, posting a mind-blowing 163 tackles. He was a First-Team All-Pro selection that season and the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Last season he was Second-Team All-Pro, and then in 2020, he was a First-Team pick after recording 132 tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles.

He’s the straw that stirs the drinks for the Colts defense and he’s without question one of the best defenseman who currently puts on the pads. The Indianapolis front office knows this too well, which is why they want to get an extension done sooner than later.

With thing progressing per Schefter, it’s looking quite likely that Leonard will enter the 2021 campaign as one of the highest-paid players out there. There’s no denying he’s deserves it, as he’s really been nothing short of sensational for the AFC South team.
