2. Mets could trade for Jose Berrios

Of all the high-priced trade targets at the deadline, you won’t find many with a bigger price tag than Twins starter Jose Berrios.

On July 16, Dan Hays of The Athletic reported Minnesota’s asking price for Berrios consists of two Top-100 prospects and a pre-arbitration player.

Should the Mets choose to take a risk, they could meet this reported asking price with two of their four prospects ranked in MLB Pipeline’s Top-100 and one of their handful of pre-arbitration eligible players who have played in the majors this season.

Mets Top-100 Prospects:

  • C Francisco Alvarez (No.34)
  • SS Ronny Mauricio (No.50)
  • RHP Matt Allan (No.58)
  • 3B Brett Baty (No.73)

Mets Pre-Arbitration Eligible Players

  • RHP Tylor Megill
  • LHP Anthony Banda
  • RHP Yennsy Diaz
  • RHP Geoff Hartlib

Any combination of those players mentioned above should be enough to strike a deal for Berrios if their reported asking price is accurate.

It’s a high price for a two-time All-Star in Berrios who will earn $6.1 million in 2021 and he has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining. In 19 starts this season, Berrios owns a 3.69 ERA, 1.081 WHIP, and a 9.6 K/9 rate over 114.2 innings pitched.

If the Mets are looking to seriously contend for a World Series in one of the next two seasons, adding an arm like Berrios would make for one of, if not the best rotations in the majors.
