Pick Analysis. AFC East. Miami Dolphins. player. 59. Scouting Report. . 4.

Upon news Watson wanted out of Houston, the Dolphins surfaced as a potential suitor and a possible preferred landing spot for him right away. But they have since, perhaps due to Watson’s situation becoming a lot more complicated, pushed more of their chips in on a commitment to Tua Tagovailioa as their quarterback, adding Will Fuller in free agency and drafting Jaylen Waddle.

The Dolphins also parted with their 2022 first-round pick in a draft day trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, which hurts their positioning to make a significant offer for Watson.

That said, there are questions about Tagovailoa as a franchise quarterback until he proves otherwise. He could legitimately hold back a team that otherwise looks pretty good this year, as the Dolphins try to get over the hump and make the playoffs. Next offseason, they could be looking to move on from Tua if possible.

It feels more likely the Dolphins would circle back to Watson next March, after giving Tagovailoa a shot this season under more normal circumstances than he had as a rookie in 2020. By then there should be far more clarity on Watson’s situation too, up to and including a possible season spent on paid leave and some sort of resolution on his legal front.

But if the Texans lower their price, Miami shouldn’t be ruled out of a renewed pursuit of Watson soon.
