3 trades the Yankees need to make at the trade deadline to make playoff push
1. Yankees rumors: Trevor Story is a true difference-maker at shortstop
If Cashman really wants to swing for the fences this week then a move for Trevor Story is really the only realistic option available to him. He may be having an off-year but he still represents a clear upgrade at a position of need for New York.
Gleyber Torres is showing solid signs of coming out of his offensive malaise, but the idea that he can become anything more than a below-average defender at shortstop is nothing more than a dream at this point. Acquiring Story would allow New York to move Torres to second base and slide DJ LeMahieu over to first. Suddenly, the Yankees’ infield defense would go from a liability to a mild strength.
Adding Story to the mix would give the Yankees another quality power hitter. Perhaps more importantly, it would also inject some much-needed speed into the team’s lineup. Story’s 17 stolen bases on the season show that he’s still a threat on the base paths.
The fact that Story is steaming towards unrestricted free agency in the offseason should motivate the Rockies to accept a reasonable offer for his services. The Yankees would still need to give up a premium prospect to get the deal done. It’s possible that someone like Deivi Garcia, Clarke Schmidt, or Oswald Peraza might serve as the headliner. The odds are stacked against the Yankees getting this deal done, but it’s the one transaction with a chance to truly turn the team’s season around.
