3 last-minute trades Mets need to make before the deadline
By John Buhler
By trading for Kris Bryant, the Mets will have a case to have won the deadline
No doubt about it. Kris Bryant could be the biggest name traded at the deadline. Along with Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer, the Chicago Cubs third baseman is a bonafide superstar playing out the final months of his contract. Unlike Scherzer, Bryant is not expected to return to his current team in free agency. Chicago has already pulled him out of the lineup with a deal imminent.
Bryant made his fourth trip to the MLB All-Star Game this year. He is slashing .267/.358/.503 on the season with 18 home runs and 51 runs batted in. Bryant has played all over the diamond this year for the reeling Cubs, which has only helped his trade value. Though he could play third base for the Mets or wherever he is dealt, dealing for him is all about getting his bat into the lineup.
Simply put, by trading for Bryant, the Mets will have made their case when it comes to winning the trade deadline. How many opportunities do you have to deal for a franchise cornerstone, a former league MVP and a World Series champion? The best part in all this is Bryant may very well sign with the Mets in his high-profile free agency this winter.
While the Mets are certainly a good team, they have plenty of areas to improves as the deadline approaches. This team has been the best in the division throughout but has yet to hit its stride. Therefore, New York needs to do whatever it can to prevent rivals like the Braves or Phillies from catching them during the dog days of summer. Dealing for these three players would help them.
What other players should the Mets look to acquire with the trade deadline rapidly approaching?
