3 free agents Mavericks should target other than Kyle Lowry
By John Buhler
Mike Conley is the ideal floor general to get the Mavericks over the top
For the right amount, adding Mike Conley in his free agency makes all the sense in the world for the Mavericks. Though he is firmly in his mid-30s, Conley is still an All-Star-caliber player in the Western Conference. He was the floor general for the best team in the West last year in the Utah Jazz and will have his number retired in a few years from his great run with the Memphis Grizzlies.
No, Dallas would not just be making a Western Conference threat in Utah worse by signing Conley, but the Mavericks are also getting a proven point guard who will help get the most out of Doncic. Even with Kidd on the sidelines, Conley is already an on-court coach who can make a high-end impact on both ends of the floor. This takes pressure off Doncic to carry the burden in the playoffs.
Age and injury concerns are real when it comes to potentially signing Conley this offseason. However, you cannot deny the impact he has had throughout his NBA career every where he has been. The Grizzlies won a ton of games with him as their Memphis maestro. Utah does not earn the top seed in the Western Conference without him. Conley undoubtedly makes Dallas better.
Overall, Dallas should not fret about being unable to land Lowry in free agency. The Mavericks can still get a great scoring two-guard in DeRozan, a solid veteran wing with something to prove in Dinwiddie or an outstanding floor general in Conley. Though adding any of these three free agents offer some degree of variance, Dallas has to swing big in the hopes of winning in its free agency.
What other guards should the Mavericks consider if they are unable to sign Lowry in August?
