Mets: Steve Cohen visiting team clubhouse sounds like a terrible idea

The New York Mets are trying to snap a three-game losing skid in Philadelphia, but their owner isn’t doing them any favors.

Steve Cohen means well. As the richest owner in all of baseball, he’s put his money where his mouth is, agreeing to spend on talented players to better the Mets playoff chances.

For the majority of the season, that plan was working out well. But then Francisco Lindor and Jacob deGrom got hurt, leading to a tailspin the Mets have yet to emerge from. Suddenly, they’re in second place in the NL East to the surging Phillies.

Fans in Queens are right to be nervous, but perhaps no one is more intrigued than Cohen, who has literal money invested in this team. Nonetheless, a trip to the clubhouse to amp up the pressure probably isn’t what the Mets need right now.

New York Mets; Steve Cohen doing more harm than good

Yes, Cohen is only trying to encourage his team. But he’s not some celebrity fan the Mets can take photos with. He’s the literal owner, who can determine any player’s future with the snap of his fingers.

The Mets’ fragile collective psyche is so obvious to anyone watching the product on the field. For Cohen, someone connected to the team itself, that should be even more clear.

Cohen didn’t go full George Steinbrenner by any means, but if he wants the Mets to surge back into first place in the NL East, perhaps he ought to stay in the owner’s box for awhile.
