Re-sign Adam Wainwright

Adam Wainwright is an ageless wonder at this point. The 39-year-old is 10-6 this year with an ERA of 3.48. The fact that he’s St. Louis’ top pitcher right now is simultaneously incredible and an issue.

Once the Cardinals bring in some top-tier reinforcements, bringing back Wainwright would be a welcome move.

Wainwright is on a one-year deal and set for free agency in 2022. He has already acknowledged the possibility of retirement. However, he’s apparently open to pitching one more year with a hard out after the 2022 season.

Considering his performance this year, there’s a legitimate argument for him to give it another go. He’s still an effective starting pitcher capable of carrying the load. That motivation would be doubled if St. Louis makes the moves to set up a World Series run.

What better way for Wainwright to finish his career than by helping the Cardinals reach the top of the mountain again? The possibility of Yadier Molina getting an extension to catch for Wainwright in 2022 sounds even sweeter.
