Shocking news has arrived out of New Orleans, as veteran cornerback Patrick Robinson has retired seemingly out of nowhere.

Who saw this coming? With Week 1 of the new NFL season about a month away, the New Orleans Saints are hard at work and were looking at Patrick Robinson to be a veteran presence for the defense moving forward. Now, though, that won’t be happening.

In some shocking news out of training camp, Robinson has informed that team that instead of balling out this season, he’s decided to hang up his cleats and retire. It goes without saying, but this is a big blow for head coach Sean Payton.

Saints cornerback Patrick Robinson informed the team he’s retiring

Robinson was getting ready to begin his 12th campaign in the league. The 5-11, 185-pounder was expected to start and be a key defensive back throughout the season. Yet, something happened in the past few weeks and he’s changed his mind on his future.

Robinson returned to New Orleans in 2018 and appeared in 26 games over the past three campaigns. Last season, Robinson played in 12 contests and started four of them. He finished the season with 14 tackles, two interceptions and four pass deflections.

He started his career spending five years with the Saints before enjoying stops with the Chargers, Colts and Eagles. In Philadelphia, no one has forgotten about his pick-six against Case Keenum and the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game in January of 2018. That season, Philadelphia also went on to stun Tom Brady and the Patriots to win the Super Bowl.

After that Super Bowl-winning season with the Eagles, Robinson packed his bags and headed back to New Orleans. Now, he’s ready to put his football life behind him. He’ll always be a fan favorite in New Orleans, while folks in Philadelphia will never forget his memorable season with the Eagles either.
