Chicago Cubs should avoid the likes of Trevor Story, Carlos Correa and Javy Baez

As tempting as it may be to sign a high-profile player to take over the shortstop position, the Cubs actually have a promising player at that position in Nico Hoerner. In fact, Hoerner and new second baseman Nick Madrigal actually form a heck of a pairing up the middle, meaning the Cubs can probably look elsewhere for major free agent acquisitions the next few years, at the very least.

Story, Correa and even Baez will be looking for contracts above that which the Cubs ownership is willing to pay right now. And that might be a good thing given how far this team is from contention at the moment. Let Hoyer and the Cubs front office build this team how they see fit, at least for the time being. Reaching for a top-tier shortstop isn’t the answer, even in a free agent class full of incredible talent at the position.
