Packers: 3 players who clinched a roster spot in first preseason game
1. WR Devin Funchess
Funchess signed a one-year deal with Green Bay during the 2020 offseason, then he opted out of the season due to COVID-19 concerns. So Saturday night was his first time in a Packers uniform for a game, and his first game at all since Week 1 of the 2019 season with the Indianapolis Colts when he suffered a broken collarbone.
Perhaps as a nod to not playing for so long, Funchess saw action over the first three quarters against the Texans. The caveat of playing against backups is too easy, as he finished with a game-high six receptions for 70 yards. He left for the locker room during the fourth quarter, but it did not appear to be a serious issue.
The Packers’ have a depth of options to go with Davante Adams at wide receiver (Allen Lazard, rookie Amari Rodgers, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Randall Cobb), with the hope someone will emerge as a viable, consistent No. 2 option. Funchess has started his case to not be forgotten in that mix on the right foot. At the very least, he has earned a roster spot.
