Cubs shouldn’t re-sign Zach Davies, admitting defeat in Yu Darvish trade

Davies was among the MLB-ready talent the Padres sent to Chicago in the Yu Darvish trade, but he has not performed up to par thus far. The 28-year-old has pitched to a 5.00 ERA in a contract year, making the Cubs decision this offseason an easy one, especially considering he made $8 million last year.

The Cubs will need rotation upgrades, but their best bet is to bring in fresh faces behind Kyle Hendriks, rather than settling for subpar, mid-level pitchers like Davies.

Cubs won’t be needing Rex Brothers in the bullpen next season

Like most facets of their game, the Cubs bullpen needs a little work heading in 2021. Rex Brothers should not be a part of it, period.

Brothers hasn’t been all-out terrible, but he has a 5.04 ERA for a reason. Even at a relatively cheap price — Brothers makes just $850,000 right now — the Cubs will look for upgrades, or at the very least fresh faces to upgrade a team that’s had two separate 10-plus game losing streaks this year.

When the team stinks, it stinks. Bringing back the same group is sure to end in a similar result, and while fans understand the need for a rebuild on the North Side, they won’t stand for downright incompetence.
