Eagles coach Nick Sirianni provides scary update on Jalen Hurts

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni provided an update on quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was scratched from Thursday’s preseason game due to an illness.

The Philadelphia Eagles were set to take on the New England Patriots in their second game of the preseason. Shortly before the game started, the Eagles announced that quarterback Jalen Hurts would not play due to an illness, paving the way for Joe Flacco to get the start. Reports indicated that the illness was not COVID-19 related shortly after the announcement, and an update was provided right after the game.

During a post-game press conference, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni revealed that Hurts felt pain in his abdomen and was sent to the hospital. From there, Hurts was diagnosed with a stomach infection and was recommended to stay at home to rest for at least two days. Additionally, Hurts tested negative for COVID-19.

Sirianni said in his presser that Hurts was not feeling great when arriving for the preseason game, Still not feeling well after pre-game warmups, Sirianni said he decided that there was no way he would be able to play. With Hurts ruled out, the Eagles relied upon Flacco and Nick Mullens to lead the offense. Philadelphia ended up losing to New England by the score of 35-0.

Hurts enters the 2021 season as the “QB1” on the depth chart after the Eagles traded Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. In his rookie season, Hurts completed 52.0 percent of his passes for 1,061 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions, while rushing for 354 yards and three touchdowns on 63 carries.

The Eagles have one more preseason game remaining on Aug. 27 against the New York Jets before the team kicks off the regular season on Sept. 12 against the Atlanta Falcons.
