3 Los Angeles Dodgers who won’t survive an early playoff exit
By Scott Rogust
Los Angeles has had its shortstop position filled by the presence of Corey Seager, who is set to join the likes of Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, Javier Baez and Marcus Semien in a crowded shortstop free agency class.
This season, Los Angeles appeared to have its contingency plan in place.
Seager was placed on the 60-day injured list earlier this year after fracturing his right hand. On the very same day that he was activated, the Dodgers acquired Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals in the blockbuster trade that also landed them ace Max Scherzer.
Considering Turner has one more year of arbitration remaining until hitting the open market at the conclusion of the 2022 season, Seager could very well be on his way out of Hollywood. He will no doubt have teams interested in his services.
As discussed in the Seager section, the Dodgers made the biggest splash of the trade deadline by acquiring Scherzer from the Nationals. This came hours after reports indicated that the rival San Diego Padres were close to a deal to land “Mad Max.”
The Dodgers had a need for a starting pitcher, as Trevor Bauer is still on administrative leave and due to the plethora of arms on the injured list. So far, the move has paid dividends for the Dodgers.
Through three starts, Scherzer recorded a 2.20 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, 23 strikeouts and three walks over 16.1 innings of work.
Regardless of how the season ends for the Dodgers, the odds of Scherzer rejoining the Dodgers are uncertain. He is set to become a free agent this offseason and will be heavily sought after by teams in need of an ace. Besides, you have to imagine the team is going to re-sign another impending free agent in the rotation in Clayton Kershaw.
