Carlos Castro got tested early by Oscar Escandon, but Castro came on and stopped Escandon in round 10 in the Pacquiao vs. Ugás undercard.

Featherweights Carlos Castro and Oscar Escandon set a strong tone on the Saturday, Aug. 21, undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugás main event. Escandon came out hot, but Castro took the victory in the last and final round.

Castro (27-0, 12 KOs), 27, from Phoenix, AZ, came in as the favorite, but Escandon had him in serious trouble in round 1. Escandon crushed Castro with a left hook at the bell that wobbled Castro’s legs and nearly put him down.

Escandon (26-6, 18 KOs), 37, from Colombia, continued to fight well, but he started to wilt by round 6. Fatigue set in, and Castro became more accurate with his right hand to Escandon’s head.

In round 7, Escandon fell to the canvas, and the referee ruled it a knockdown, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission reviewed the footage and ruled it a slip. Still, Escandon didn’t look solid on his feet, and he bled from the nose and mouth.

Castro boxed well from the outside and stayed patient. In the 10th and final round, Castro caught Escandon with a right hand to the head that staggered Escandon. He didn’t go down, but Castro unleashed a flurry of punches that sent Escandon down.

Escandon beat the count but didn’t react well to the referee’s instructions, and the referee waved off the fight giving Castro the TKO victory.

It was a good test for the young Castro, as he passed and moves on, ready to move up the featherweight ladder.
